沸石(zeolite)是一種礦石，最早發(fā)現于1756年。瑞典的礦物學家克朗斯提(Cronstedt)發(fā)現有一類天然硅鋁酸鹽礦石在灼燒時會產生沸騰現象，因此命名為";沸石";(瑞典文zeolit)。在希臘文中意為";沸騰";(zeo)的";石頭";(lithos)。此后，人們對沸石的研究不斷深入。

沸石是一種天然的、無毒的、無味的且對環(huán)境沒有影響的吸附劑。沸石是沸石族礦物的總稱。它是具有特殊構造和性能的一經組架狀硅酸鹽。在沸石構造中，硅氧骨干中的空隙彼此相通，形成了孔道。參加晶格的陽離子位于孔道中，在一定的外界條件下可以進行交換。水份子沿孔道進入晶格，與陽離子形成水合離子。在加熱和干燥氣候中，水分子又可沿孔道離開晶格，晶格并不因而破壞。沸石晶體受到的灼熱，孔道中的水急速氣化排除，狀似沸騰，沸石即由此得名。

沸石是一種新興材料，被廣泛應用于工業(yè)、農業(yè)、國防等部門，并且它的用途還在不斷地開拓。沸石被用作離子交換劑、吸附分離劑、干燥劑、催化劑、水泥混合材料。天然沸石是鋁硅酸鹽類礦物，外觀呈白色或磚紅色，屬弱酸性陽離子交換劑，經人工導入活性組分，使其具有新的離子交換或吸附能力，吸附容量也相應增大。主要用于中小型鍋爐用水的軟化處理，以除去水中的鈣、鎂離子，從而減少鍋爐內水垢的生成，減輕水測金屬的腐蝕，延長鍋爐的使用壽命。在廢水處理中，可用于除去水中的磷和鉛以及六價鉻。失效后的沸石可用于濃鹽水逆流再生后重復使用。

目前沸石在污水處理主要應用其吸附性能，影響沸石吸附效果的主要因素有很多：沸石種類、沸石粒徑、溫度、污染物濃度、水力停留時間、pH 值、離子強度、改性方法等。沸石在污水處理中主要應用于：
（1.）用于放射性廢液的處理，吸附放射性同位素。
（2.）市政廢水中銨離子的去除
（3.）中小型鍋爐用水的軟化處理
（4.）去除水中的重金屬離子

【使用沸石應注意的事項】

1．要按用途選用沸石粉的規(guī)格。如用于水質改良應使用180目至200目的規(guī)格。
2．質量好的沸石粉，天然沸石含量應達到50%以上。
3．吸氨值是沸石粉的一個重要的質量指標。合格的沸石粉吸氨值一般都大于100mg當量/100g。每畝每米水深使用沸石粉25-50公斤，可起到除去水中95%氨氮，凈化水質增加溶氧的作用，同時提高水體總堿度，穩(wěn)定水質。
